Details

This is the place for spotting the who’s who of Lisbon, if you feel the need to mix with the elite. Undoubtedly, it is one of the city’s trendiest neighbourhoods and there are several theories about its name origin. Some state that it was after Gaspar Dias, alias “Chiado”, who started the first winery/inn in the mid-sixteenth century here, others say that the area took its name from popular 16th century poet, António Ribeiro Chiado. What we do know is that Chiado is a very popular shopping and dining destination. The theatre-going public love it for pre-show dinners. Other revellers make it their first stop on a night out in neighbouring Bairro Alto. It must be the special 18th century charm and ambience of the area that attracts so many, as it always seems busy, be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. After the area suffered a devastating fire in 1988, the city planners got it right when they chose to reconstruct the buildings and reinstate Chiado to its former glory. Architect Alvaro Siza Vieira was the man to thank for the enormous success of what it is one of the main attractions to many the shopping center“Armazéns do Chiado”. Chiado has something to suit every interest, be it theatre, fine food, fashion or shopping… are you still there?
