Overview

What makes the National Palace of Sintra so special is the mix of different cultural influences. These have combined to give this National Monument a charm all of its own.

Originally built by Moors, in the 11th century, Afonso Henriques (the first Portuguese King) upon the conquest of Lisbon and Sintra annexed it in 1147, which was subject to several modifications from 1281 onwards. This beautiful palace was constantly modified until middle-16th century after which the building’s appearance remained largely unchanged ever since, making such an iconic attraction for tourists.

If the National Palace’s history is so unique, what is on display inside is even more remarkable and well worth viewing - in-palace museum provides more than a glimpse into the power and wealth of the royal family.

The grounds and gardens have an extraordinary charm of their own, with the most spectacular vistas in every direction. Glancing back at the grand palace with its enormous conical-shaped towers adds a truly fairy-tale ambience to this attraction. The National Palace of Sintra is proof that different cultural influences can work harmoniously together.

The subtle combination of Moorish, Gothic and Manueline styles makes this a unique structure, and the magnificent treasure-trove that it is today. Truly one-of-a-kind anywhere on the planet, so be sure to add this to your itinerary.
