Overview

Visit Lisbon’s neighbour cities and a short journey brings you to the romantic and popular attraction of Sintra. This is your diary note to remember to add in a visit to the majestic surrounds of Monserrate Palace – this is one of the most noble of aristocratic residences anywhere, although plenty of competition vies for your attention in this regal neighbourhood.

Situated four kilometres from historic Sintra, Monserrate Palace announces itself triumphantly above everything that surrounds it. Typifying the extravagant - and oft eclectic – tastes of the 19th century, the building represents an outpouring of daring and bold design, as it meets and mingles with the beautifully landscaped grounds. Life must have been a real “struggle” back then.

When English poet of note Lord Byron first visited Monserrate in 1809, the main dwelling lay in ruins. Nevertheless, Byron fell in love with the estate, finding it inspiring for his works (of which Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage). Later Francis Cook, Viscount of Monserrate, purchase the estate and soon a magnificent palace (1858) rose from the ruins.

The Palace combines several architectonic styles, of which Gothic, Indian and as Moorish influences meets the eye. Visiting it is mandatory!

Bought by the State in 1949, the palace and grounds finally became places of public interest in 1993, which helped to put Monserrate Palace on the tourist destination map.

We have much to be thankful for when it comes to seeing what our forebears did with their money and imaginations. The legacy left for the visitor to explore and enjoy is priceless, in today’s hurly burly life.
