Overview

The Vasco da Gama Aquarium, a splendid scientific and educational institution, was originally part of the monarch’s private estate and opened its doors to the public in 1898. This was to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of the new sea route from Europe to India via Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, as discovered by renowned navigator Vasco da Gama.

The purpose-built structure overlooks the Tagus River in the Oeiras district of Lisbon. There are five main halls containing around 90 different aquariums and holding tanks displaying more than 300 marine species.

The highlight of this attraction is the Shark room where one can see the several shark species (though only in scale models and not in an aquarium), some of which quite rare.

The Portuguese Navy took over responsibility for running the aquarium at the turn of the last century. Apart from the marine life, the Aquário Vasco da Gama functions as a museum with an oceanographic theme, so a double attraction awaits the enthusiastic visitor keen on learning more about nautical matters.
